"MOB TAKES SAM SMITH FROM NASHVILLE CITY HOSPITAL"

A SECOND LYNCHING IN NOLENSVILLE, TENNESSEE

Nashville, Tennessee (JFK+50) On December 16, 1924, the Associated Press reports that "a 15 year old negro named Sam Smith "was taken from City Hospital here in Nashville last night "and lynched at Nolensville*, Tennessee, 12 miles from here."

Sam Smith reportedly shot Ike Eastwood, a grocer, Friday night in Nolensville while attempting to steal auto parts along with his uncle.

The mob arrived in 30 automobiles and a small group of men went into the hospital where found Mr. Smith and took him away.

AP says the young man was hanged and his body riddled with bullets.

This was the 2nd lynching in Nolensville since the Civil War.  The last occurred in 1894.

JFK+50 NOTE

No one was ever convicted for the murder of Sam Smith.

*Nolensville, located in Williamson County, Tennessee, was established in 1797 by William Nolen, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War.  5 lynchings took place in the county from the post Civil War period through the early 20th century.
