RUSSIAN GRAND DUCHESS TOURS D.C. 'UNOFFICIALLY'
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On December 12, 1924, The Evening Star reports that the Grand Duchess of Russia* "set out from her suite at the Willard Hotel...to explore the historical points of interest" here in the Nation's Capital" today.
Yesterday the Grand Duchess, whose husband "aspires to the throne of a restored Russian empire," toured the home of George Washington, Mount Vernon, and Arlington National Cemetery. She also paid a visit to Union Station.
The Grand Duchess's visit to the United States is strictly unofficial because we do not recognize the Soviet government and because "only visitors of high rank are received at the White House and State Department."
JFK+50 NOTE
The Evening Star misidentifies the Grand Duchess as "Alexandra Feodorvna" (who was killed along with her husband Czar Nicholas II & children in July 1918).
The Grand Duchess visiting D.C. in 1924 was Viktoria Feodorovna. Her husband, Grand Duke Krill Vladimirovich would proclaim himself Russian emperor in exile in 1926.
*Viktoria Feodorovna (1876-1936) was born in British Malta. After the fall of Russian monarchy in 1917, VF fled to Finland where she gave birth to her only son.
She was the daughter of Alfred & Maria Alexandrovna. VF was the grand daughter of Queen Victoria (UK) & Emperor Alexander II (Russia).
