JFK HONORS TRUMAN COMMITTEE
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On the evening of March 9, 1961, President John F. Kennedy appeared briefly at a dinner honoring the 20th anniversary of the Truman Committee* held at the Mayflower Hotel** here in the Nation's Capital.
The Truman Committee, created on March 1, 1941 and chaired by Senator Harry S Truman of Missouri for three years, was charged with ending "waste, corruption and profiteering" in the U.S. defense industry. It held hundreds of hearings and saved taxpayers millions of dollars.
The United States Senate website states that..."no senator ever gained greater political benefit from chairing a special investigating committee than did Missouri's Harry S. Truman."
JFK mingled with guests and spoke with former President Truman who had met with JFK in the White House earlier in the day.
*The Special Senate Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program (a.k.a. Truman Committee) was the brainchild of Senator Truman who toured military bases around the country & found that contractors were "being paid a fixed profit no matter how inefficient their operations."
**The Mayflower Hotel, located at 1127 Connecticut Ave, is the largest luxury hotel & the longest in continuous operation in the District of Columbia.
