SENATE COMMITTEE TO VOTE ON BEGINNING WORK ON WILSON DAM
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On April 4, 1922, the agriculture committee of the United States Senate decided to hold a vote, scheduled for the following day, on a motion to amend the Army Supply Bill "by adding $7,300,000 for immediate commencement of work on the Wilson dam* at Muscle Shoals, Alabama."
The motion to amend was offered by Senator John W. Harreld** (R-Oklahoma).
The agriculture committee also decided to begin public hearings beginning next week "on all private proposals for development, operation, lease, purchase and completion of the Muscle Shoals projects."
*Wilson Dam, named after President Woodrow Wilson & completed in 1924, spans the Tennessee River in Northwest Alabama. It is one of nine TVA dams on the river & was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Cost of construction, $47,000,000.
**John William Harreld (1872-1950) was born in Butler County, Kentucky & was admitted to the bar in 1889. JWH served in the US House of Representatives, 1919-1921 & U.S. Senate 1921-1927. He was the 1st Republican senator elected in Oklahoma.
