"BEACH GIRL & LOBSTER HAVE SUFFERED ALIKE"

PRESIDENT ASKED TO CALL CONFERENCE OF MARITIME NATIONS TO STOP WATER POLLUTION

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 5, 1922, the House Foreign Affairs Committee revealed that "the bathing beach girl and the lobster have suffered alike from pollution of navigable waters* by oil burning ships."

The information came as the result of a report on a resolution asking President Warren G. Harding to call a "conference of maritime nations to stop it."

The committee report also found that lobsters, oysters and other kinds of fish "were being destroyed" and "bathing beaches had been greatly damaged" as a result of pollution.

*water pollution is the release of substances into bodies of water that makes water unsafe for human use & disrupts aquatic ecosystems.
