"GIFFORD PINCHOT HAS BEATEN THE ORGANIZATION"

PINCHOT WINS MAJORITY OF VOTE

Philadelphia (JFK+50) On May 18, 1922, the Associated Press reports that Gifford Pinchot* had received a majority of 8,027 votes over George E. Alter with "all but 391 election districts" reporting."

The Associated Press states...

"Gifford Pinchot has beaten the organization...victor over the strongest political machine in the country."

The AP adds that this was a "personal fight against a group backed by Governor William C. Sproul**."

*Gifford Pinchot (1865-1946) was born in Simsbury, CT & graduated Yale University, 1889.  GP was Chief of the Division of Forestry 1898-1905, Chief of USFS, 1905-1910 & Governor of Pennsylvania, 1923-1927, 1931-1935.

**William Cameron Sproul (1870-1928) was born in Colerain Township, PA & graduated Swathmore College, 1891, WCS was Governor of Pennsylvania, 1919-1923.
