"MAY BE THE LARGEST EVER TO HIT THE EARTH"

ENORMOUS METEORITE STRIKES BLACKSTONE, VIRGINIA

Norfolk, Virginia (JFK+50) According to a special dispatch to the New York Tribune dated May 12, 1922, "an enormous meteorite...struck with terrific force last night in a pine forest on the outskirts of Blackstone*, Virginia."

The bolide**, believed to be the largest ever to hit the earth, left a 500 square foot hole and it is estimated to weigh 25 tons.

The falling meteorite was visible in Norfolk, one hundred miles away.

*Blackstone, named in honor of English jurist William Blackstone, is located in south central Virginia's Nottoway County.

**Bolide is a large meteor which explodes in the atmosphere or any large crater-forming body.
