"GERMAN OPPOSITION FIERCE IN MANY RESPECTS"

ALLIES MAKE SUCCESSFUL LANDING AT NORMANDY, THRUST SEVERAL MILES INLAND

Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force (JFK+50) On June 6, 1944, "allied tank and infantry forces landed in the Normandy* area of Northwest France...and have thrust several miles inland."

The successful landing was made "against unexpectedly slight German opposition," and with losses "much smaller than...anticipated."

Airborne troops preceded the landings before daylight and also incurred "extremely small" losses.

Some 4000 Allied ships took part in the invasion along with 11,000 planes.

Although German opposition was less effective than predicted, Associated Press reports that it was "fierce in many respects."

JFK+50 NOTE

According to the National WWII Museum of New Orleans, "the Germans fought fiercely, particularly in a stretch of beach code named Omaha."  Although Allied losses were heavy there, landing was successful & the Allies advanced inland.

*Normandy is a region of Northern France with a varied coastline including white chalk cliffs & WWII beachheads, site of D-Day invasion.
