"HUSBAND SEVERS VARMIT'S HEAD & PRIES OPEN ITS JAWS"

ANGRY WEASEL, STRIPPED OF PLUMP CHICKEN, SINKS TEETH INTO FARM WOMAN'S HAND

Culpepper, Virginia (JFK+50) On August 17, 1922, Mrs. William Dixon of Brightwood* attempted to rescue one of her 'plump pullets' from the jaws of an angry weasel**.

While she managed to grab hold of the chicken and force Mr. Weasel to release it, the varmit immediately sank its teeth into her hand.

Mrs. Dixon's screams brought out her husband who had to secure a butcher knife to "sever the weasel's head."  Even so, its jaws had to be pried open to free Mrs. Dixon's hand.

A not so bright morning in Brightwood for the Dixon family, but an important enough story to appear on the front page of the Evening Star.

*Brightwood is a rural-suburban area located in Madison County, north central Virginia.  Population is 1283.

**weasel is a small, active predator with a long, slender body & short legs.  It feeds on small mammals & has been considered vermin for taking poultry from farms.
