MRS. ROOSEVELT TO GET T.R. STAMP
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) In a news report written on October 24, 1922 and published the following day in The New York Tribune, "the first stamp of the new five cent denomination, bearing the likeness of former President (Theodore) Roosevelt, will be given to Mrs. ... Roosevelt next Friday."
The new issue goes on sale at TR's birthplace, Oyster Bay, New York, New York City and at the Washington Philatelic Agency*.
Stamps from the first sheet will also be given to Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., and daughter of the 26th POTUS and First Lady, Mrs. Alice Roosevelt Longworth.
*The Philatelic Agency was created as a separate office of the Post Office Dept. to handle requests from collectors because of the rising popularity of stamp collecting & the increased number of stamps issued.
JFK+50 NOTE
The five cent TR series, issued 1922-1925, totaled 780,624,677 stamps.
