"BECAUSE OF MRS. HARDING'S ILLNESS"

NEW YEAR'S DAY RECEPTION AT WHITE HOUSE CANCELLED

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On December 30, 1922, the Evening Star reports the New Year's Day reception scheduled at the White House on Monday (January 1, 1923) has been cancelled "because of Mrs. (Warren G.) Harding*'s illness."

The annual reception had been discontinued during the Wilson administration, but was revived last year by the Hardings.

Mrs. Harding stood beside her husband greeting guests in the reception line for more than five hours.  The First Lady recently expressed regret that she would not be "strong enough physically" to do it this time.

*Florence Mabel Harding (1860-1924) was born in Marion, Ohio & served as 1st Lady 1921-1923.  She was known as "The Duchess" & gave elegant parties.
