"AMERICA IS OUT OF THE WHOLE MESS"

AMBASSADOR HARVEY WANTS TO HELP BRITISH EMPIRE IN TIME OF DISTRESS

London (JFK+50) On February 25, 1923, the Evening Star reports United States Ambassador to Great Britain George Harvey*, "speaking as the guest of honor at the dinner of the London Press Club" last night said...

"I was glad we were out of the mess (and) I (want) to do everything I can...to help (the British) Empire in the terrible distress she is in."  

The Ambassador continued...

"There is no limit I would not go...now that the wretched debt business is out of the way."   

Mr. Harvey was responding to an earlier statement he made in Washington, D.C.  that "America is out of the whole mess."  

*George Brinton McClellan Harvey (1864-1928) was born in Peacham, Vermont & educated at Peacham Academy.  GBMH was managing editor of NY World 1891-1894 & later owned Harper's Weekly & Metropolitan Magazine.  

GBMH was a top advisor to Woodrow Wilson but broke with him in 1916 & supported Charles Evans Hughes.  He was US Ambassador to Great Britain 1921-1923.
