"FIRST TIME FOR A JUDGMENT OF THIS KIND"

VAMPS HAVE EQUAL STATUS AS HOME WRECKERS IN D.C. COURTS

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On March 22, 1923, the Evening Star reports District of Columbia courts will place female 'vamps'* found guilty in divorce cases..."in the same category with male 'home wreckers**.'"

District Chief Justice Walter Irving McCoy*** assessed costs and lawyer's fees against a woman named as a co-respondent in a wife's lawsuit against her husband.

This action marks the first time "a judgment of this kind" has been handed down.

Mrs. Jennie E. Stein was awarded an "absolute divorce" from George Mitchell Stein, who along with Grace Mercy, was ordered to pay $150 to Mrs. Stein's attorney in addition to court costs.

*Vamp...a seductress, or woman who uses her attractiveness to men to get what she wants

**Homewrecker...a person who causes a break-up in a marriage

***Walter Irving McCoy (1859-1933), born in Troy, NY,  was Associate Justice & Chief Justice of the District of Columbia Court.  WIM was appointed CJ of DC Courts by President Woodrow Wilson & served 1918-1929,
