"HARDING TO DO WHAT HE PLEASES WHEN HE PLEASES"

FLORIDA PRESS URGES PUBLIC TO LEAVE PRESIDENT ALONE TO ENJOY A REAL VACATION

New Smyrna*, Florida (JFK+50) On March 7, 1923, the Evening Star reports "President (Warren G.) Harding has drawn a new map of Florida" consisting "of a 250-mile stretch of shallow water."

The area, known as the Indian River** Inlet, is flanked by "11 green areas on shore labeled 'GOLF.'"  David Lawrence writes that the local press is encouraging the public "to let the President absolutely alone" so that he can enjoy a "real vacation."

Mr. Harding will be quartered on a houseboat when he is not on the links and unlike the rigorous schedule at the White House, the President, while on a ten-day vacation, will "do what he pleases, when he pleases."

The Secret Service will keep an ever watchful eye on the Chief Executive tagging along on a small yacht and having access to a speed boat and high-powered automobile just in case.

JFK+50 NOTE

We spent vacation time at Daytona Beach growing up, but as a young adult starting going to New Smyrna.  Our most frequently visited "home away from home" was Moontide Condominiums in New Smyrna Beach.  Our daughter enjoyed her July birthdays there & we always got her a beautiful cake from Mon Delice French bakery.

*New Smyrna Beach is located in Volusia County, Florida on the Atlantic Ocean with the city located on the west side of the Indian River.  The area was 1st settled by Europeans in 1768.  During the 1920s, the river islands nearby served as sites for moonshine stills.

**Indian River is a 121-mile long brackish lagoon located near the east coast of Florida.   IR extends southward from the Ponce de Leon inlet in Volusia County.
