"TO OBSERVE TACTICAL MANEUVERS OF PACIFIC FLEET"

NAVY SECRETARY & MEMBERS OF CONGRESS SAIL THROUGH PANAMA CANAL

ABOARD THE U.S.S. HENDERSON* IN THE PANAMA CANAL (JFK+50) On the morning of March 14, 1923, Navy Secretary Edwin Denby**, accompanied by United States Senators and Congressmen, sailed through the Panama Canal on their way to Panama Bay to review the American battle fleet.

At Gatun, the party was enlarged when additional members of Congress arrived at Colon on a passenger steamer.  The dignitaries will observe tactical maneuvers of the Pacific Fleet.

*USS Henderson (1916-1943) served as a transport ship for the US Navy in both WWI & WWII.  In 1943, it was converted into a hospital ship & commissioned as the USS Bountiful.

**Edwin Denby (1870-1929) earned his L.L.B. at the University of Michigan & served in the US Navy 1898, 1917-1919, & was Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Harding & Coolidge, 1921-1924.
