"FIRST MAJOR WIN OF 1960 PRIMARY CAMPAIGN"

SENATOR KENNEDY WINS FIRST MAJOR DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY OF 1960

Madison, Wisconsin (JFK+50) On April 5, 1960 Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts won the Democratic Presidential Primary marking his first major win of the primary campaign.

The victory, at the time, was considered important because JFK, a Roman Catholic, won in a non-Catholic state.  The final vote tally was KENNEDY 476,024 (56.5%) HUMPHREY 366,753 (43.5%).

In his opening statement of the Wisconsin campaign, Senator Kennedy said...

"I regret...that Mr. (James) Hoffa and others are coming into Wisconsin to challenge my legislative record, my integrity and my competence for the Presidency.

But I prefer to leave that judgment, too, to the people of Wisconsin...and I shall accept their decision on April 5."
