"SENATORS WILL TRY TO GET HARDING TO BACK DOWN"

G.O.P. IS SPLIT ON PRESIDENT'S WORLD COURT FIGHT

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On April 25, 1923, the Washington Times reports a split in the Republican Party now exists because of President Warren G. Harding's "fight for American participation in the international court*."

The President will "face a series of conferences" today with G.O.P. leaders who are "hostile" to his program.

While the world court proposals, writes H.K.Reynolds, may result in a "hopeless split" in the party, this could be avoided if Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr. of Massachusetts and Senator James E. Watson of Indiana can convince Mr. Harding to "back down" on his proposals.

The President, however, does have solid support from Congressman William Graham of Illinois who is prepared to back his proposals on the world court.

*World Court, a.k.a. Permanent Court of International Justice was adopted by the League of Nations (1920) & ratified (1921).  Headquarters was at The Hague, Netherlands
