"I GUESS...BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN HERE SO LONG"

HEAD CURATOR OF NATIONAL MUSEUM DOES NOT KNOW WHY HE WON THE WALKER GRAND PRIZE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 11, 1923, the Evening Star reports Dr. Leonhard Stejheger* "has been awarded the Walker grand prize of $1000."

The award is "conferred at intervals of three years by the Boston Society of Natural History for scientific services."

Dr. Stejheger, however, says he does not know "exactly what the award was for."

He said...

"I guess I must have got the $1000 prize because I have been here so long."

*Leonhard Hess Stejheger (1851-1943) was born in Bergen, Norway & earned his PhD at the University of Christiania.  He was an ornithologist, herpetologist & zoologist.  LHS specialized in vertebrate natural history studies.
