"MEN NOT TO RETURN UNTIL 'GIRLS' ARE REMOVED"

15 NON-UNION CORE MAKERS WALK OUT WHEN FOUNDRY HIRES TWO WOMEN

Indianapolis, Indiana (JFK+50) On May 25, 1923, fifteen core* makers who work at the Federal Foundry Company, 502 S. Harris Street, walked out "when two girls were placed in the department."

The Indianapolis Times reports that the men the women replaced were "non-union" workers and although no strike was called, "the men said they would not return to work until the girls were removed."

Federal Foundry Company officials say they will continue to employ the women.  A police officer has been assigned to the foundry**.

*core is a preformed, bonded, sand insert placed into a mold to shape the interior of a casting

**foundry is a factory where castings are made by melting metal, pouring it into a mold, then letting it cool to solidify
