VANDERLIP CALLS FOR COUNCIL OF FOREIGN RELATIONS
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 13, 1923, the Sunday Star reports Frank A. Vanderlip*, former president of National City Bank, denounced "as archaic and incompetent the machinery by which the United States handles its foreign relations."
Mr. Vanderlip, of New York, was speaking before the general convention of the New Jerusalem.
He supports a constitutional change to take the power of treaty-making "out of the hands of the president, secretary of state & Senate," and wants to replace it with a "council of foreign relations" elected by the people.
*Frank Arthur Vanderlip (1864-1937) was born in Aurora, Illinois & served as Assistant Secretary of Treasury 1897-1901, president of National City Bank 1909-1919. FAV played a major role in founding the Federal Reserve System.
