"THESE PEOPLE FORCED ME INTO BANKRUPTCY"

BUTCHER'S SIGN TRIGGERS RIOT BY MARYLAND WOMEN

Hagerstown, Maryland (JFK+50) On May 8, 1924, a riot resulted here in Hagerstown when a swarm of women "tore down and destroyed" a sign made by a butcher who claimed on the sign that they owed him money.

Jacob Loshbaugh "had been sold out for rent" so made a "big placard" on which the names of the alleged debtors were written.  Beside each name was the amount owed.

Below the list of names, Mr. Loshbaugh wrote...

"These people forced me into bankruptcy."

JFK+50 NOTE

The Star reports that news of the butcher's sign spread quickly "like wildfire" and soon women "swarmed the streets" and headed for the closed shop on the door of which the butcher had hung his sign.

Please pardon my accidental posting of this story one day early.
