"A BULWARK OF STRENGTH IN REPELLING THE GERMANS"

FRENCH GENERAL MANGIN DIES IN PARIS

Paris, France (JFK+50) On May 12, 1925, Associated Press reports the death today of General Charles Marie Emmanuel Mangin*, French hero of the Battle of Verdun during the World War.

The AP report describes the General as "a bulwark of strength for France in repelling the German invasion."

After the war, he served on the Supreme War Council & was awarded the grand cross of the Legion of Honor.

JFK+50 NOTE

Apparently Adolf Hitler didn't care much for General Mangin. During his visit to Paris in 1940, after the Germans had taken the city, Hitler ordered the statue of General Mangin destroyed.  A new statue was erected in Paris in 1957.

*General Charles M.E. Mangin (1866-1925) was born at Sarrebourg, France & received life-long training as a soldier.  CM commanded the 5th Infantry Division & the 11th Army Corps in WWI.  He was nicknamed "The Butcher."
