PRESIDENT FORD ESCAPES ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT IN SACRAMENTO
Sacramento, California (JFK+50) On September 5, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford survived an assassination attempt here in Sacramento.
The would-be assassin, Lynette 'Squeaky' Fromme*, a follower of Charles Manson**, was disarmed by a Secret Service agent before she could fire one of the four rounds in her pistol.
*Lynette Alice Fromme was born in Santa Monica, California in 1948. Her father, who kicked her out of the house after her high school graduation, was an aeronautical engineer. LAF then became the 2nd member of the infamous Manson family. She lived at Spahn Ranch where owner George Spahn gave her the nickname 'Squeaky.'
**Charles Milles Manson (1934-2017) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was convicted to 7 counts of 1st degree murder & conspiracy to commit murder. CMM was sentenced to life imprisonment & served from 1971 until his death.
JFK+50 NOTE
Fromme was dressed in a red robe & armed with a Colt M1911 45 cal. semi-automatic pistol. While she had 4 rounds loaded into the weapon, there wasn't a bullet in the chamber when she pulled the trigger. As she was apprehended, she reportedly said, "Can you believe it? It didn't go off."
LSF moved to Sacramento to be close to Charles Manson where he was imprisoned. In a 2019 interview, she said "Was I in love with Charlie? Yeah, I still am!"
