A DOZEN NAZI OFFICIALS SENTENCED IN NUREMBERG
Nuremberg, Germany (JFK+50) On October 1, 1946, the International War Crimes Tribunal* sentenced twelve high-ranking Nazi officials here in Nuremberg.
They included Hermann Goering and Joachim von Ribbentrop who both received death sentences. Rudolf Hess**, Adolf Hitler's former deputy, received life imprisonment.
Ten of the Nazi officials were hanged while Goering escaped execution by committing suicide.
*The International Military Tribunal was established by the Allied Powers to prosecute Nazi war crimes, crimes against peace & crimes against humanity. The war crimes trial lasted from November 20 1945 to October 1 1946. 7 Nazis were sent to prison & 3 were acquitted.
**Rudolf Hess, arrested in May 1941, was in prison before most of the Nazi atrocities were committed. He was acquitted of war crimes & crimes against humanity, but found guilty on lesser charges.

The International Military Tribunal for the Far East also was established by the Allied Powers to prosecute Japanese war crimes.
