SOVIETS EXPLODE 'MOST POWERFUL' ATOMIC BOMB 'IN HISTORY'

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On October 30, 1961, The White House announced that the Soviet Union has exploded an atomic weapon described as "the most powerful...in history."

The 50 megaton atomic bomb was detonated at the Soviet Arctic test site at Novaya Zemlya archipelago.

The White House said...

"The Soviet explosion was a political act.  Any such weapon would be primarily a mass killer of people in war.  (This) test...is an incitement to fright and panic in the cold war."

President John F. Kennedy added...

"The Soviet Union has shown...complete disregard for the welfare of mankind."

JFK+50 NOTE

The Soviet hydrogen bomb produced a mushroom cloud 37 miles high & damaged a village 100 miles from the site of the blast.
