CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS DAY 3: JFK MEETS WITH SOVIET REPS AT THE WHITE HOUSE
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On October 18, 1962, Day 3 of the Cuban Missile Crisis, President John F. Kennedy met with representatives of the USSR in the Oval Office at The White House.
The meeting, which began at 5 p.m., included United Nations ambassador Andre Gromyko, Vladimir Seyemenov and Anatoly Dobrynin.
Gromyko read a statement from the Soviet government claiming all assistance being provided to Cuba was for "purely defensive" purposes.
President Kennedy listened politely to the statement without revealing that he had photographic evidence in the Resolute desk's drawer which contradicted the Soviet statement.
JFK did, however, express the view of his government that nuclear weapons in Cuba would be the "gravest (of) consequences."
