COOLIDGE DEEMS BUDGET MEETING MORE IMPORTANT THAN SOCIETY DINNERS
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On January 31, 1926, The Sunday Star reports that last evening President Calvin Coolidge "threw a monkey wrench" into Washington society when he called his Secretary of State and War Secretary to cancel their dinner plans and attend a meeting with General Herbert Lord*, Director of the Budget.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kellogg** were required to cancel their scheduled diplomatic dinner party while Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Davis*** did not show for a dinner party honoring Vice President Dawes.
*Herbert Mayhew Lord (1859-1930) was born in Rockland, Maine & graduated Colby College, 1884. HML served as Director of Finance for the US Army in WWI. He was Director of the Budget 1922-1929.
HML was a strict fiscal conservative who focused on cutting federal spending and reduction of the national debt.
**Frank Billings Kellogg (1856-1937) was born in Potsdam, New York & served in the U.S. Senate & as Secretary of State. FBK won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1929.
***Dwight Filley Davis (1879-1945) was born in St. Louis, Missouri & educated at Harvard University & Washington University. DFD was a veteran of WWI & an avid tennis player who created the Davis Cup.
