"A STEP BACK FROM BRINK OF NUCLEAR WAR"

JFK APPOINTS TEAM OF NEGOTIATORS IN HOPE FOR 'QUICK DIPLOMATIC ACTION' ON CUBA

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On October 29, 1962, The Evening Star reports President John F. Kennedy "moved today for quick diplomatic action to end the Cuban (Missile) crisis."

The move follows Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev's agreement to dismantle his missile bases in Cuba.

The world, The Star says, "has taken a step back from the brink of (nuclear) war" and hopes have been raised "for easing tension in other world trouble spots."

The President has appointed a three-man team "to co-ordinate diplomatic activities."  The team includes John J. McCloy, George Ball and Roswell Gilpatrick.

United Nations Secretary General U Thant spoke with U.S. & Soviet representatives to arrange for verification of the pull out of Soviet weapons from Cuba.
