CONGRESS PASSES CUBAN DEMOCRACY ACT


The United States Congress passed the legislation today which will establish a complete commercial, economic & financial embargo on Cuban imports & exports.


The act strengthens the original partial embargo set up in October 1960.*


*The embargo is still in effect & is the longest lasting trade embargo in US history.

THE BEATLES ARE HERE!


George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr, better known as "The Beatles", arrived today at JFK airport.
  
They were welcomed by 3000 fans & are scheduled to appear on Ed Sullivan's television show.*


*The Beatles appearance on "Ed Sullivan" will be viewed by 73 million Americans.

SOVIET COMMUNIST PARTY GIVES UP MONOPOLY


The Central Committee of the Communist Party of the USSR today has accepted Mikhail Gorbachev's recommendation that the party give up its' 70 year long monopoly on political power.


Former US Secretary of State, Caspar Weinberger, said that he is "personally....astonished..." by this turn of events.*


*The USSR will cease to exist as of December 31, 1991

EUROPEAN UNION AGREEMENT SIGNED


The Treaty of Maastricht, establishing "economic integration, common security policies" & co-operation in investigation of crime, terrorism & immigration issues, was signed today.  The agreement also provides for the establishment of a "European" currency.*


*By 1993, the agreement will be ratified by 12 nations & the "Euro" will be introduced on January 1, 2002.

3000 MARCH FOR WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE


The "muddy" streets of London were the scene here today of a march of 3000 women in a procession sponsored by the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies.

One of the marchers said afterwards:


"We had done what seemed to so many the ridiculous thing and the crowd, by taking us seriously, had robbed it of its absurdity."


The procession, known as the "Mud March", is the 1st large procession in behalf of the cause of women's right to vote.

HARVEY FIRESTONE DEAD!


The founder of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, Harvey Firestone, died today at the age of 93 in Miami Beach, Florida.




Firestone as a young man became convinced that rubber tires would provide a smoother carriage ride than tires made of wood or steel.


Firestone began rubber tire production at his plant in Akron, Ohio in 1903.  He sold 2000 sets of tires to the Ford Motor Company*


*Firestone's company was sold to Bridgestone in 1931.
