HIGH COURT HANDS DOWN MIRANDA DECISION


The United States Supreme Court today handed down its decision in Miranda v. Arizona establishing the principle that those people who are placed under arrest by the authorities must be advised of their rights before being interrogated.*


*While most of us have never been arrested, thanks to television & movies we are very familiar with this statement which came as a result of the Miranda decision:


"You have the right to remain silent.  Anything you say can & will be used against you in a court of law.  You have the right to an attorney.  If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed for you."

LBJ APPOINTS THURGOOD MARSHALL TO COURT


President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Thurgood Marshall to the US Supreme Court today.


Marshall, born in 1908, will be the 1st African-American to sit on the High Court.


Thurgood Marshall earned his law degree from Howard University.  He served as the chief counsel for the NAACP from 1938 to 1961.


Marshall was counsel for Linda Brown in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case.


He was appointed to the US Court of Appeals in 1961 by President Kennedy, but was not confirmed until the following year.

NY TIMES BEGINS TO PUBLISH "PENTAGON PAPERS"


The New York Times began today to publish the Department of Defense's top secret study of the American government's involvement in Vietnam.


Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara authorized the study in 1967.


The papers were kept in a safe at the Pentagon but were smuggled out in parts by anti-war defense employee Daniel Ellsberg.

PIONEER 10 LEAVES THE SOLAR SYSTEM


The world's 1st outer-planetary probe, Pioneer 10, left the solar system today after more than 10 years in space.


Pioneer 10 was launched in 1972 on a mission to Jupiter.  The probe reached Jupiter in December 1973.

ALEXANDER THE GREAT IS DEAD


Alexander the Great, born in Macedonia & educated by Aristotle, died today at the age of 33.


Alexander entered a military career like his father & never lost a battle.


By 330 BC, Alexander controlled all of Persia & Asia Minor.*


*His body was later returned to Alexandria where it was laid to rest in a coffin of gold.
