JFK PROPOSES NUCLEAR TEST BAN TREATY
President John F. Kennedy was the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremonies of American University in Washington, D.C. today.
JFK, in a break from cold war tradition, made peace overtures to the Soviet Union.
The President said that despite our philosophical differences "we can still hail the Russian people for their many achievements--in science & space, in economic & industrial growth, in culture & in acts of courage."
JFK called for a "genuine peace, the kind that makes life on earth worth living..." & announced that talks will soon begin in Moscow between the Soviets, British & Americans to work out a comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty.
The President said:
"In the final analysis our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet, we all breath the same air, we all cherish our children's future, & we are all mortal."

JFK SIGNS EQUAL PAY ACT
President Kennedy signed into law today HR6060 or The Equal Pay Act of 1963.
The law will make it a violation of federal law to pay female employees less than males performing the same work.
JFK, speaking from the Oval Office, also asked Congress for day care services & federal tax deductions for child care.
He said that while the Equal Pay Act does not solve all the problems, it is "a good first step."

JFK SENDS A TELEGRAM TO ALABAMA GOVERNOR
President John F. Kennedy sent a telegram to Alabama Governor George C. Wallace today.
The subject of the message is the Governor's threat to block the entrance of black students to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
The President asked the Governor to comply with court orders which affirm the right of the black students to register at the state university.
JFK warned Wallace that if his hand was forced, he would have to activate the Alabama National Guard to enforce federal law.

EDWARD KENNEDY GRADUATES FROM MILTON
The youngest son of Joseph P. & Rose F. Kennedy, Edward M. Kennedy, graduated today from Milton Academy.
The ceremonies were held at the Robert Saltonstall Gymnasium.
The graduate's father gave the commencement address.

BRIDGET BISHOP HANGED IN SALEM
After being found guilty for practicing witchcraft in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Bridget Bishop was hanged on Gallow's Hill in Salem today.
Bishop was known for her questionable moral character. She worked in a tavern, often dressed provocatively & was married 3 times.*
*The Salem Witch Hysteria was to result in the hanging of 19 men & women with 1 man, Giles Corey, being pressed to death for refusing to plead.
