RICKOVER FILES A "TOY" COMPLAINT
Admiral Hyman Rickover, known as the father of the Nuclear Navy, complained today that a plastic toy modeled after the Polaris submarine will give the Soviets vital information about the design of American warships.
It is not known at this time if President Kennedy shares Admiral Rickover's concerns.

The United States Supreme Court today ruled that federal courts cannot issue injunctions to halt strikes that violate an existing collective bargaining agreement.

SALLY RIDE BECOMES 1ST AMERICAN WOMAN IN SPACE
Mission Specialist Dr. Sally Ride became the 1st woman from the United States to fly in space today.
She & her fellow astronauts lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida aboard the space shuttle Challenger.
This space shuttle mission will last 6 days.
Dr. Ride is an astrophysicist from Stanford University.
It has been 20 years since the 1st woman to fly in space, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, accomplished the feat.

SALT II TREATY SIGNED IN VIENNA
President Jimmy Carter & Soviet General Secretary Leonoid Brezhnev signed the Strategic Arms Limitations Talks II agreement today in Vienna, Austria.
The treaty will establish guidelines & restrictions on nuclear weapons.*
*SALT II will not be ratified by Congress because the USSR will attack Afghanistan. The treaty met with much criticism in the US as it was seen as a "sell-out" to the Soviets.

NAPOLEON DEFEATED AT WATERLOO
Napoleon Bonaparte's French army was defeated today at the village of Waterloo, 12 miles south of Brussels, Belgium.
The victory belonged to the Duke of Wellington's Prussian united army.
The French forces numbered 72,000 while Wellington had 68,000 troops.*
*Napoleon returned to Paris & 4 days later abdicated & was exiled on the remote island of St. Helena in the Atlantic.

UNITED STATES DECLARES WAR ON BRITAIN...AGAIN!
The United States of America officially went to war today with Great Britain.
The war between the two nations, located on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, began after a declaration of war was passed by the US Congress & signed by President James Madison.
President Madison's war message stated the United States is going to war with Britain in response to a British blockade, impressment of US sailors into the British navy & inciting Native-Americans on the American frontier.*
*The War of 1812 will last until early 1815 although a peace treaty is signed in December 1814.
The war ended with a "status quo antebellum" meaning nothing basically changed from the beginning to the ending of the war.
Americans, however, would call it "The 2nd War for American Independence."
