JFK FEDERALIZES ALABAMA NATIONAL GUARD
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) President John F. Kennedy issued an executive order today forcing Alabama Governor George C. Wallace to comply with the order of the Federal Court to desegregate public schools in his state.
The order will "Federalize" Alabama's Army & Air National Guard to assist African-American students enroll in the state's public schools.
Troops will also be used to prevent protests or assaults on African-American students.*
*JFK issued a 2nd executive order on this date which placed married men in a separate category of draftee status, giving unmarried men precedence in the selection process.

JFK GETS REPORT ON VIETNAM
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) President Kennedy was briefed today by General Victor Krulak (USMC) & Joseph Mendenhall of the State Department after their "fact-finding" mission to Vietnam.
General Krulak told the President that progress is being made against the communists but Mr. Mendenhall said the Diem regime is near collapse.*
*Diem will be overthrown in a coup in early November 1963.

PRESIDENT JACKSON NIXES BANK OF U.S.
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) President Andrew Jackson today announced that the United States government will no longer use the Second Bank of the United States.
President Jackson will remove all Federal funds in the bank & redistribute them to selected state banks.*
The President intends to allow the charter of the 2nd Bank of the United States to expire in 1836.**
*These banks become known as "pet banks".
**Congress will censure Jackson for abuse of Presidential power in 1834.

PERRY WINS VICTORY ON LAKE ERIE
Lake Erie (JFK+50) Captain Oliver Hazard Perry led a US squadron of 9 ships today to victory over 6 British ships in a key battle of the War of 1812.
During the Battle of Lake Erie, Captain Perry's flagship, Lawrence, was badly damaged forcing him to transfer to the Niagara.
27 American sailors were killed in the battle with 96 more wounded.
The British lost 40 dead & 94 wounded.
After the battle, Captain Perry sent the following message to General William Henry Harrison:
"We have met the enemy & they are ours!"*
*The British were forced to abandon Detroit as a result of the US victory.
