JFK SIGNS FULBRIGHT-HAYS ACT
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) President John F. Kennedy signed into law this afternoon HR 8666, officially known as the Mutual Educational & Cultural Exchange Act of 1961.
The legislation promotes mutual understanding among peoples around the world through educational & cultural activities.
"The Fulbright Program aims to bring a little more knowledge, a little more reason, & a little more compassion into world affairs & thereby to increase the chance that nations will learn at last to live in peace & friendship."

JFK MEETS MISS USA & MOVIE PRODUCER & CAST
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) President John F. Kennedy welcomed Miss USA, Jo Ann Odum, at the White House today.
Miss Odum will compete in the Miss World contest.*
Afterward, JFK had lunch with director, Otto Preminger, & the cast of "Advise & Consent" which features JFK's brother-in-law, Peter Lawford.
*Miss USA of 1961 was a finalist in the Miss World contest.

SPECIAL FORCES ACTIVATED AT FORT BRAGG

Fort Bragg, North Carolina (JFK+50) The 5th Special Forces Group (US Airborne) was activated today at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
The Special Forces will train South Vietnamese troops to fight behind enemy lines.
JFK visited the Special Warfare Center to review the program & authorized the Special Forces to wear the Green Beret.

JFK SENDS McNAMARA & TAYLOR TO SAIGON
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) President John F. Kennedy sent Secretary of Defense, Robert S. McNamara & the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Maxwell Taylor, to Saigon, South Vietnam today.
The purpose of the assignment will be to provide an "urgent review" of the situation there for the President.

FDR WANTS NEUTRALITY EMBARGO REPEALED
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) President Franklin D. Roosevelt appeared before Congress today to request that the Neutrality Acts be amended to lift the embargo which prohibits the sending of military aid to Europe.
FDR is primarily concerned about making it easier for the United States to supply armaments to Great Britain & France.*
*Congress approved FDR's proposal on November 4, 1939

CHIEF JOSEPH DIES ON RESERVATION
Colville Reservation, Washington (JFK+50) The Nez Perce chief who once led his people in an attempt to escape the United States Army & the reservation, Chief Joseph, died today here at the Colville Reservation in Washington State.
Chief Joseph was 64 years old.
When his escape to Canada was cut off by Colonel Nelson Miles in Northern Montana, Joseph was forced to surrender.
Chief Joseph said:
"I am tired of fighting. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more, forever."
