JFK+50 GOES TO WASHINGTON
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) JFK+50 blogger, John White & his daughter, Jennifer, toured the Nation's Capital on Saturday, September 24 through Tuesday, September 27, 2011.
They were visiting Washington to attend Caroline Kennedy's Book Tour event which was held on the campus of George Washington University on Monday, September 26.

In addition, the Tennesseans toured the Capitol Building, the Library of Congress, the Holocaust Museum, the Lincoln Memorial, WWII Memorial & the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.

CAROLINE KENNEDY BOOK TOUR COMES TO GEORGETOWN

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of President & Mrs. John F. (Jacqueline) Kennedy, came to George Washington University today on the 1st stop of her book tour "Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations On Life with John F. Kennedy".

The new book, which came out on September 14, is published by Hyperion.*
The book is based on oral history recordings made by Mrs. Kennedy with JFK Presidential aide & historian, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. beginning in March 1964, just 4 months after JFK's assassination.
The recordings were made at Mrs. Kennedy's home in Georgetown. After their completion, the tapes were sealed, per Mrs. Kennedy's request, for a period of 50 years.
*The book includes a set of 8 CDs of the recordings.
Caroline Kennedy decided that the 50th anniversary of the beginning of her father's Presidency was an appropriate time for their early release.
Appearing with Caroline at the event was the noted historian Michael Beschloss who wrote the introduction of the book.

Caroline said that what impacted her most in listening to the recordings was "the way her mother felt about her father & the special relationship they had."

Caroline said:
"I think the transcripts give a good portrayal of her. The way she looked at the world comes through very vividly, how she appreciated historical figures & felt that what made them human was really what made them more interesting."
After speaking to the audience, Caroline personally autographed books for those attending.*

JFK+50 Notes:
We arrived at Lisner Auditorium on the campus of GWU at 5 pm. We were fortunate to get seats right in front of the podium 3 rows back (the 1st 2 rows were reserved).
After the program, we were among the 1st to get our book signed & I told Caroline what an honor it was to meet her & that her father was my hero. It was certainly some night.
Caroline was born in 1958 when I was 10 years old. She is married to Edwin Schlossberg. They have 3 children. Caroline's daughter Rose is 23, just a year younger than my daughter, Jennifer.**
**I would like to pay my respects to a friend we made at the event. He is Adam Kress & shares our interest in history & government. Adam is Assistant Director of Communications at Rockefeller College at the University At Albany, New York.

DEFENSE SECRETARY SAYS NUCLEAR WEAPONS ARE AN OPTION IN BERLIN
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara strongly implied today that the government of the United States is prepared to use nuclear weapons in the defense of West Berlin.
In a press conference, McNamara said:
"It is our policy to utilize whatever weapons are needed to preserve our vital interests. Quite clearly, we consider access to Berlin a vital interest."

LBJ AWARDS CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) President Lyndon B. Johnson today awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor to Sgt. David Dolby of the United States Army First Cavalry.
Sgt. Dolby, on May 21, 1966, saved the lives of many of his fellow soldiers during a firefight with North Vietnamese troops.
LBJ said:
"No one hates war & killing more than I do (but) we recognize the hard reality that only military power can bar aggression in Southeast Asia."
