JFK LIBRARY IS DEDICATED IN BOSTON

Boston, Massachusetts (JFK+50) The John Fitzgerald Kennedy Presidential Library was officially dedicated today at Columbia Point in Dorchester near the campus of the University of Massachusetts.
The JFK Library building design, by I. M. Pei, is a simple geometric structure with a large glass pavilion.

The building overlooks Dorchester Bay & the Atlantic Ocean.
Present at the dedication ceremonies today were Mrs. John F. Kennedy, Caroline, JFK Jr., & Senator Edward M. (Ted) Kennedy.
President Jimmy Carter & 1st Lady Rosalyn Carter also took part in the dedication.*

Caroline introduced John F. Kennedy, Jr. who read from the Stephen Spender poem "I Think Continually of Those Who Were Truly Great".

OPERA HOUSE OPENED BY QUEEN IN SYDNEY

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (JFK+50) Queen Elizabeth II formally opened the new Sydney Opera House today.
The Sydney Opera House is located at Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbor.
The Opera House was designed & built by Danish architect Jorn Utzon.*

The magnificent structure will be the home of Opera Australia, the Australian Ballet, the Sydney Theatre Company & the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Construction on the project began in March 1959 & was completed this year at a cost of $102 million.
*Jorn Utzon was awarded the Pritzker Prize, architecture's highest honor, in 2003. The citation with the prize reads:
"There is no doubt that the Sydney Opera House is his masterpiece. It is one of the great iconic buildings of the 20th Century--a symbol for not only a city, but a whole country & continent."

JFK RETURNS TO WHITE HOUSE WITH COLD
Chicago, Illinois (JFK+50) President John F. Kennedy today was forced to cut his political campaigning short due to his bad health.
Press Secretary Pierre Salinger announced that the President had come down with a bad cold &, after conferring with his doctors, decided it would be best to return to the White House.*
*The "bad cold" was just a "cover" story. JFK really had to return to Washington for intense meetings with his national security advisers in response to the placement of Soviet nuclear missile bases in Cuba.
JFK+50 will be out of town the next couple of days. We will resume posting on Saturday, October 22, 2011. On that date we will review the events relating to the Cuban Missile Crisis of Sunday, October 21st & Monday October 22nd, 1962.
