KHRUSHCHEV SAYS ALL MISSILES OUT OF CUBA
Moscow, USSR (JFK+50) Premier Nikita Khrushchev, speaking at a reception this evening in honor of the anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, announced that the Soviet Union has removed all its nuclear missiles from Cuba.
Khrushchev said:
"We were very close to a thermonuclear war. If there had not been reason, then we would not be here tonight & there might not have been elections in the United States."

GAITHER REPORT SAYS WE NEED MORE FALLOUT SHELTERS
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) The final report of a special commission appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in the aftermath of last month's Soviet launch of Sputnik was submitted today.
The commission, headed by Ford Foundation Chairman H. Rowan Gaither, says that the Soviet Union is ahead of the United States in development of nuclear weapons & recommends that more fallout shelters need to be built.*
*The report was supposed to be secret, but many of its conclusions were leaked to the press. JFK picked up on the report to claim in his campaign for president in 1960 that there was a "missile gap".

FDR ELECTED TO UNPRECEDENTED 4TH TERM
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) 4 years ago, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected to an unprecedented 3rd term.
Tonight, FDR was elected to an unprecedented 4th term.
The President defeated Republican challenger Thomas E. Dewey, Governor of New York.
The final electoral vote result is:
FDR 432 DEWEY 99
FDR had 53.4% of the popular vote while Dewey had 45.9%.
Mr. Roosevelt goes back to the White House with a new Vice-President. Senator Harry S Truman of Missouri will replace Vice-President Henry A . Wallace on March 4, 1945.*
*Delegates chose Truman on the 2nd ballot at the Democratic Convention. With FDR's health in decline, there was concern that he would not survive a 4th term & some considered Wallace too liberal to become president.

JEANETTE RANKIN ELECTED TO CONGRESS
Helena, Montana (JFK+50) Jeannette Rankin, a graduate of the University of Montana who was born near Missoula, became today the 1st woman in United States history to be elected to Congress.
Congresswoman-elect Rankin has been a leading suffragist in Montana.*
*A pacifist, Rankin's 1st vote in Congress was in opposition to US entry into WWI. She was defeated for re-election in 1918, but was elected again in 1940. Rankin then cast her vote against US entry into WWII.
