Chris writes that Jack later told Red Fay that Jackie was the only woman he COULD have married & that while Jack was a man whose attention was hard for anyone to keep for long, Jackie "managed to grab & hold it."
Jack liked Jackie's qualities which were different from other girls he had known. She, like he, was "detached & elusive."
They met at a dinner party in Georgetown given by mutual friend, Charlie Bartlett. He was a correspondent for the Chattanooga Times.
Chris writes that the 12 year age difference between the two "seemed to appeal to Jackie" & she brought to Jack a social status "he didn't quite have on his own."
When Jack proposed in 1953, Jackie accepted & the wedding was held on September 12, 1953 in Newport, Rhode Island.
Chris writes that during the weekend festivities as Jack was "gazing at his wife's family's cove on Narrangansett Bay," he said "this would be a helluva place to sail in the presidential yacht."
