"JOHNNY WE HARDLY KNEW YE": Memories of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Getting Into Politics II.
Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Today we continue our report on Chapter 2 of the book by Kenneth P. O'Donnell & David F. Powers with Joe McCarthy. It is published by Little, Brown & Company.
The title of Chapter 2 is "Getting Into Politics".
This chapter continues the discussion of JFK's entry into the political profession in 1946.
Dave Powers rented a vacant store on Main Street in Charlestown for $50 a month. This became the JFK FOR CONGRESS headquarters.
Powers did this at the sacrifice of his own popularity in the district because candidate John Carter was the favorite of the "locals".
When the criticism of Dave got really bad, Jack would say:
"Never mind, Dave, years from now you can say you were with me on Saint Crispian's Day. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers."*

John Galvin** signed on as JFK's publicity director & would continue in that position in the 1952 & 1958 senatorial campaigns.
Mark Dalton*** became JFK's closest political adviser during his 3 terms in Congress.
**John Galvin had been public relations director for John Dowd, a friend of Joe Sr. & head of a Boston advertising agency.
***Dalton was experienced in both politics & writing. He was also a movie critic for the Boston Herald.
