ONIONS BURKE & THE 1956 CONVENTION I
Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Today we begin our report on Chapter 4 of the book by Kenneth P. O'Donnell & David F. Powers with Joe McCarthy. It is published by Little, Brown & Company.
The title of Chapter 4 is Onions Burke & The 1956 Convention.
Kenneth O'Donnell tells us that while he was working on JFK's 1952 Senatorial campaign, he did not know that Jack Kennedy was courting Jacqueline Bouvier.
This "compartmentalization" of JFK's life has been mentioned in most biographies of John F. Kennedy.
Kenny says that when he & Dave Powers were with Jack, they talked Massachusetts politics "& very little else."
Kenny says Dave 1st learned of Jack's love interest when JFK asked him in the spring of 1953....
"Do you think there is really much of a problem in getting married to a girl 12 years younger than you are?"
A brief account of the marriage follows & then Kenny writes:
"After the 1st year of their marriage, 1954, (it) turned out to be the unhappiest year of their life together. Jackie suffered a miscarriage & Jack's spinal injury became almost unbearably painful."
