COLUMBUS LANDED IN AMERICA 520 YEARS AGO TODAY
October 12, 2012 (JFK+50) 520 years ago, on October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in what would one day be called AMERICA.
Columbus set foot on the Caribbean island he would name SAN SALVADOR. The natives called it Guanahani.
Christopher Columbus, who was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451 & had been turned down for financial support for his plan to sail West in both Genoa & Venice, convinced Queen Isabella & King Ferdinand of Spain to back him.
Columbus secured a contract which entitled him to 10% of all revenues from the new lands as well as the rank of ADMIRAL OF THE OCEAN SEA.
He also would become VICEROY & GOVERNOR of all lands he claimed in behalf of the Spanish Crown.
Upon landing, Columbus named the people he encountered who were native to the land 'INDIOS' or indians in Spanish.
Columbus wrote in his journal:
"I think they can very easily be made Christians for they seem to have no religion. If it please our Lord, I will take six of them to your Highness..."
