CALIFORNIA GOES TO NIXON

Sacramento, California (JFK+50) President-elect John F. Kennedy's popular vote lead in the state of California evaporated today as the result of the absentee vote count was announced.

Vice-President Nixon was declared the winner of the absentee vote total with a final count of 132,168 to 84,458.

The final popular vote total in California stands at:

NIXON (R)       3,219,211
KENNEDY (D) 3,206,051

California's 32 electoral votes gives Mr. Nixon 219 which is well short of the 269 needed to win the presidency.  JFK's electoral total stands at 303.

Mr. Kennedy will be sworn in as the 35th President of the United States on January 20, 1961.


CLARK GABLE DIES AT AGE 59

West Hollywood, California (JFK+50) Motion picture star Clark Gable was pronounced dead this evening at the age of 59.

Mr. Gable, who just finished the film Misfits, died at Cedars Sinai Hospital here in West Hollywood, California.

Gable is best known for his role as Rhett Butler in the 1939 Academy Award winning film Gone With the Wind.

Hospital officials say that the cause of death was complications of a heart attack Mr. Gable suffered 10 days ago.

Clark Gable will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California.
