"DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR"

December 27, 2012

"Do You Hear What I Hear?"

One of the most popular Christmas songs of today was actually written during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 when the world teetered on the edge of nuclear war.

"Do You Hear What I Hear?" was the collaborative effort of the husband-wife team of Noel Regney & Gloria Shayne.

Noel wrote the lyrics while Gloria provided the music.

The song celebrates the birth of Jesus & offers a plea for peace.

"Do You Hear What I Hear?" was released in late November 1962.  It was originally recorded by the Harry Simeone Chorale.

The most popular version, however, is the recording made by Bing Crosby on October 21, 1963.

             Bing Crosby & Danny Kaye
                      White Christmas

Said the night wind to the little lamb,
do you see what I see?
way up in the sky, little lamb,
do you see what I see?
A star, a star, dancing in the night
with a tail as big as a kite,
with a tail as big as a kite.

Said the King to the people everywhere
 listen to what I say,
 Pray for peace, people everywhere
 listen to what I say,
The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness & light,
He will bring us goodness & light.
