THE BATTLE OF NASHVILLE BEGINS
Nashville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Union forces under Major General George H. Thomas launched an attack today on the Confederate positions held here in the city of Nashville by the Army of Tennessee under Lt. General John Bell Hood.
Hood's forces arrived in the city on December 2 in hopes of forcing Union armies under General William Tecumseh Sherman out of Georgia.
Initial reports say that Union forces attacked the right, the left & the center of Hood's positions.
An attack on the Confederate right was slowed by Rebel artillery fire, but US forces on the left were able to attack 5 enemy redoubts.
Meanwhile, the Union IV Corps made a frontal assault on the left of the Confederate line.
By day's end, the Reb's left flank had been captured.
The battle is expected to continue tomorrow.*
*The 2 day Battle of Nashville ended with a Union victory as Hood's forces were forced to retreat to Tupelo, Mississippi where Hood resigned his command.
