CAROLINE KENNEDY AND FAMILY CELEBRATE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF JFK VISIT TO IRELAND

New Ross, Ireland (JFK+50) Caroline Kennedy, along with husband Edwin Schlossberg and their children Rose, Tatiana and Jack, are in Ireland today taking part in celebrations honoring President John F. Kennedy's visit 50 years ago this month.

Also with Caroline are cousin Sydney Lawford and her husband, Peter.

Yesterday, Caroline and her family were in Limerick* and the village of Bruff where they paid honor to Thomas Fitzgerald who was born there in 1823.

Caroline related the words of her grandmother Rose who "always had it that the Fitzgeralds were the better half of the family."

*Limerick is located on the River Shannon in County Limerick.

Today here in New Ross**, Prime Minister of Ireland Enda Kenny dedicates the opening of the Kennedy Homestead Visitor Center.  The ceremony was followed by a parade.

**New Ross is located on the River Barrow in County Wexford.  The most famous of the Irish emigrants who left here in the late 1840s were JFK's great grandparents, Patrick and Bridget Murphy Kennedy.

In about an hour from now (as this post is written), JFK's sister Jean Kennedy Smith will present the flame taken from JFK's eternal flame at Arlington National Cemetery to the Prime Minister.  It will then be used to light the Kennedy Eternal Flame of New Ross.

The Irish Eternal Flame will burn near a famine-era replica ship and a memorial to President Kennedy.

Earlier this week, Joseph Kennedy III, great grandson of Robert Kennedy, spoke at the lighting of the torch from the JFK eternal flame at Arlington National Cemetery.  He said...

"We light this torch...as a symbol of the bond forged by a young American president who found his way home.

When we see that flame it is not only a reminder of the ties between our families and our nations, but also as an emblem of the lamp light that welcomes all."
