June 24, 2013

JFK SPEAKS AT GERMAN PEACE CORPS SIGNING 50 YEARS AGO TODAY

Bonn, Germany (JFK+50) President John F. Kennedy spoke at the signing of a charter establishing the GERMAN PEACE CORPS at the Villa Hammerschmidt, the German Presidential residence, here in Bonn 50 years ago today, June 24, 1963.

President Kennedy said:

"Western Europe and the United States really are islands of prosperity in a sea of poverty.  South of us live hundreds of millions of people on the edge of starvation, and I think it is essential that we demonstrate our concern for their welfare."

Dante once said that the hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in a period of moral crisis maintained their neutrality.  This is a moral crisis.  This is an opportunity and I am confident that the German youth and...the older citizens...will lay a seed which will bring a rich harvest for all."

JACKIE AND JACK ENGAGED 60 YEARS AGO

McLean, Virginia (JFK+50) Hugh and Janet Auchincloss of Hammersmith Farm, announced the engagement of daughter, Jacqueline Lee Bouvier, to Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy 60 years ago today, June 24, 1953.

Miss Bouvier was born on July 28, 1929 in East Hampton, New York.  Jackie attended Vassar College, the Sorbonne in Paris and George Washington University.

The young couple were introduced at a Georgetown dinner party hosted by mutual friend, newspaperman Charles Bartlett.

At the time they met, Jackie was the "Inquiring Camera Girl" for the Washington Times-Herald.

The wedding was scheduled  to take place at St. Mary's Church in Newport, Rhode Island on September 12, 1953.

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) Billy Martin's Tavern, the oldest family-owned restaurant in the Nation's Capitol, was the place where Senator John F. Kennedy proposed to Jacqueline Bouvier.

Billy Martin's Tavern, established in 1933, is located at Wisconsin and N Street in Georgetown.

"Martin's Tavern has had the honor of serving every president from Harry S Truman to George W. Bush."

My daughter, Jennifer, who is currently doing an internship with Tennessee Congressman Phil Roe, had brunch at Billy's on a Saturday afternoon during our visit to DC in September 2011.

We returned for breakfast the following Tuesday morning and sat in the Kennedy Proposal Booth*.

*JFK and Jackie frequently dined in this booth at Billy Martin's Tavern and on June 24, 1953, Jacqueline accepted Jack Kennedy's proposal of marriage.

Since that day, it has been called the "Proposal Booth."
