DEATH OF ADOLF HITLER

ADOLF HITLER COMMITTED SUICIDE IN BUNKER 70 YEARS AGO

Berlin, Germany (JFK+50) Seventy years ago today, April 30, 1945, Adolf Hitler committed suicide in his Bunker below the Reich Chancellery here in Berlin.

Hitler, who had been in the Bunker since January 16th, took a cyanide capsule and shot himself with a pistol.  Eva Braun, who Hitler had married the day before, joined her husband in suicide.

According to the History Learning Site, Soviet troops attacking Berlin outnumbered the Germans 15 to 1.  The only means by which Hitler and the others in the Bunker could learn what was going on in the city was by telephoning civilians at random.

Having learned that Benito Mussolini and his mistress had been shot and their bodies humiliated, the Fuhrer gave instructions to his adjutant, Otto Gunsche, to take his and Eva's bodies into the garden outside the Bunker's entrance and burn them.

After saying goodbye to their comrades, Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun disappeared inside the Fuhrer's private apartment and committed suicide.  The time was 3:15 in the afternoon.

Hitler's propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels and his family, also died in the Bunker.
