NOTHING LESS THAN A MAMMOTH SUBMARINE

JFK+50:  Volume 7, No. 2329

GERMAN NAVY CONSTRUCTING MONSTER U-BOATS

Baltimore, Maryland (JFK+50) One hundred years ago today, June 3, 1917, Folke Stembech, nephew of the Swedish national minister of health stopping off here in Baltimore on his way to Mexico, reported that the Germans were in the process of constructing "mammoth" submarines at Kiel* to operate outside the War Zone.

The Chicago Daily Tribune described these new U-boat monsters as being "like a large oil tank steamship capable of high speed, instant submersion, of great supply capacity and equipped with disappearing armaments."

These submarines have the advantage of disguise and would be able to approach an enemy vessel "under a peaceful...aspect" but then launch a torpedo and disappear.

*Kiel is the capital & most populous city in Northern Germany's state of Schleswig-Holstein.  The city is the traditional home of the German navy's Baltic fleet.
