PRESIDENTIAL LIMOUSINE STUCK IN THE MUD

JFK+50:  Volume 7, No. 2410

PRESIDENT & MRS. WILSON GET STUCK IN THE MUD IN MARYLAND

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) It was learned 100 years ago today, August 23, 1917, that the evening before while on an automobile ride through the Maryland countryside, the Presidential limousine bearing the First Couple was backed off the highway "into a mire" causing the wheels to sink "almost out of sight."

Secret Service agents managed to locate a nearby farmer with a team of mules, but "the mules tugged in vain" causing the President to "smile at their efforts."

Finally, a five ton truck driven by a Baltimore man was able to "pull out the Presidential car."
