JFK+50:  Volume 7, No. 2441

LA FOLLETTE SAYS AMERICAN PRESS CONTROLLED BY WAR PARTY

Toledo, Ohio (JFK+50) One hundred years ago this afternoon, September 23, 1917, Senator Robert M. "Fighting Bob" La Follette of Wisconsin, speaking at the coliseum here in Toledo, "denounced the war in general and the United States Democratic administration in particular."

The Senator said that American newspapers were under the control of the "war party, the financial interests of the country."  Mr. La Follette added that Congress had been "swayed" by President Woodrow Wilson to the extent that the declaration of war on Germany "was not the representative opinion of a democratic government."

Senator La Follette was guest speaker of "The People's Church" composed of Socialists and headed by Professor Scott Nearing*.

*Scott Nearing (1883-1993) was born in Morris Run, PA.  SN earned his B.S. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1905 & a PhD in Economics in 1909.

SN joined the American Union Against Militarism in 1916 & condemned President Wilson's preparedness program.  SN taught social sciences at Toledo University 1915-1917.  He made 200 speeches a year during WWI.
